위에서 말씀드렸던 학자금 부담은 학생들에게 미래를 저당잡히는 것도 문제이지만, 당장 현실의 문제로 작용합니다. 커리어에서 조사한 바에 따르면 휴학자의 40% 가까이가 휴학을 고려하는 이유로 학자금 부담을 들었습니다.

학기당 4백여만원 가까이에 이르는 등록금을 학교를 다니면서 벌기엔 부족할 정도로 높은 까닭입니다. 학기당 등록금을 400만원이라고 보았을때 이 금액을 벌기 위해서는 주당 80만원 가까운 돈을 벌어야 하는데, 과외를 잡아도 벌써 3개나 되지 않겠습니까?

그렇다면 학자금 대출은?

그렇다면 대출을 받고 소득이 있을때 내면 되지 않느냐? 라고 생각하시는 분이 있을 것입니다. 실제로 2005년 이후 정부에서 직접 기금을 만들어 정부보증 학자금 대출 제도를 시작했습니다. 그리고 실제로 많은 사람들이 학자금 대출을 받고 있습니다. 정부의 학자금 대출은 현재 63만명, 2조 3천억원에 이르는 실정이며, 정부 보증도 받기 어려울 정도의 신용상태에 놓인 학생들을 고려하면 이보다 훨씬 많을 것으로 추정되고 있습니다.

철없는 학자금 대출

신문기사를 검색하다 보니 이런 제목이 있었습니다. '철없는 학자금 대출', 날로 올라가는 학자금 대출 금리의 증가 때문에 그렇습니다. 경제위기와 어려운 학생들의 사정, 청년실업등의 문제를 인지한 정부가 대출금리를 낮추겠다거나 등록금 후불제를 하겠다거나 등등의 공약을 내놓았지만, 엊그제 신문기사에 뜬 내용은 '철없는 학자금 대출' 이었습니다.

이율이 내려가긴 했는데, 여전히 이자율이 높은 것은 사실입니다. 한국은행이 최근 석달간 기준금리를 2% 가까이 내렸음에도 불구하고, 학자금 대출 이자율은 연간 7.3%로 정해졌다고 최근 뉴스에서 발표된 것입니다.

이날 신문에서는 "시중금리가 제로금리에 가까운 상황에서, 졸업 후 영리 활동의 보장이 없는 대학생들의 학자금 대출 금리가 이렇게 높게 책정되었다는 것은 전혀 납득할 수 없다” (등록금넷), "학생들 상대로 고리사채업을 하는것인가" (내일 신문) 등의 반응이 쏟아졌습니다.

이 사이에 등록을 앞두고 있는 학생들의 한숨은 깊어만 갈 뿐입니다.
